Maria Viall Selected To All-American Underrated Team
April 22, 2002
Milwaukee - UWM center Maria Viall was selected to the Womenscollegehoops.com All-American Underated Team, according to the website. Viall, the 2001-02 Horizon League Player of the Year, helped her team to a 20-8 record this season as a sophomore while starting 27 of 28 games played . To qualify for the website's honors, players could not have been recognized on its All-American team, on any regional Kodak All-American Team or on any of the first three AP All-American teams. Womenscollegehoops.com selects a first, second, third and honorable mention team out of approximately 3,400 remaining Division I players. "While it is hard to argue too much with the All-American teams, the players (selected) also deserve recognition because with 318 division one teams and well over 3,400 division one players, the players below would still, in our view, be among the top 1.5% of all players in the college game," John Dalton said on womenscollegehoops.com's website.
Viall ranked second among league leaders in scoring (16.7 ppg ) and ranked first in both field goal percentage (.550) and blocked shots (1.59), while also ranking fourth in rebounding (6.9 rpg). She was named the Horizon League Player of the Week twice this season and broke the school single-season record for most field goals and best field goal percentage.
