Panthers Drop Butler for Fourth Straight Win
February 8, 1999 MILWAUKEE - The UWM women's basketball team moved into fourth place in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference with a pair of league wins at the Klotsche Center last week. The Panthers (9-11, 5-4 MCC) defeated Wright State, 56-41, on Feb. 4, and preseason favorite Butler, 78-63, on Feb. 6. Both teams defeated UWM last month. Daryl Schaffeld (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd) led the way for UWM in both games, scoring a team-best 16 points in each game. Against Wright State, Schaffeld's 16 points came in only 17 minutes on the floor. She hit 4 of her 6 three-point attempts, a mark that ties her for sixth on the UWM single-game leaderboard. Schaffeld's hot hand from behind the arc proved infectious, as the team shot 60 percent from three-point range in the game, the seventh highest total in school history. Corrin Von Wald (Hudson, Wis.-Hudson) added nine points and five rebounds in the game. Against Butler, who entered last week tied for first in the MCC, 10 Panthers scored at least two points and grabbed at least one rebound in a well-rounded win. Four Panthers scored in double figures in the game, led by Schaffeld's 16 points. The junior guard connected on 4 of her 5 three-point attempts, second all-time at UWM. Von Wald added 13 points, Kelly Lubbers (Chanhassen, Minn.-Chaska) scored 12 and Teri Stoltenberg (Green Bay, Wis.-Pulaski) added 11. The Panthers try to make it five in a row when they play at Detroit on Thursday, Feb. 11. The Titans, currently in third place in league standings (5-3), fell to UWM at the Klotsche Center last month.
Cleveland State (10-10, 4-4 MCC) plays host to UWM on Feb. 13.
