Milwaukee Head Coach Sandy Botham
On losing their home opener
"It's disappointing to be on the road, come home and lose a game. But, we knew Dayton was a good team. They are very balanced and have a lot of different ways they can score. We knew this was going to be a test for us and that it would come down to the wire. Something we emphasize and talk about is our attention to detail, doing the little things, and we just didn't do enough of it."
On the last plays of the game
"This will be a game I'll run through my head over and over--what play I could have run, defensively, and obviously the last play. They were just matching up with us. We still had opportunities to drive, the skips were still there. We had the same opportunities we had when they were in man. It just seemed to stymie us more. In retrospect, call timeout, look what's going on. But, they could have gone back to man, so it's just a chess match."
On both teams' cold shooting
"Hustle plays are going to win games for us. We talked about it at halftime. Shots were not falling for either team. Nobody could really get into a great rhythm. We saw it even for most of the second half. It's doing the intangibles. Finding ways to win. Defensively, getting up and pressuring. Looking at the fact we had 18 offensive boards is pretty good, we just didn't finish."
Dayton Head Coach Jim Jabir
On returning to Milwaukee where he coached at Marquette
"It's nice to come back to Milwaukee. We have a very young team that lost a lot of close games last year--I think 12 in single digits--and, to come back home and play against Sandy (Botham), who was my assistant at Marquette, and beat a very good team is a great feeling. And, hopefully it is a building block for our program."
On UWM's defense
"Offensively we couldn't score. It was a defensive struggle. You have to credit the Panthers for their defense. They made it look ugly. We've been scoring around 80 the last two or three games and they cut us in half. Luckily, we were resilient enough to win."
On facing the Panthers in the second half of a road trip
"We blew out Loyola by 28 or 26 (Saturday) and Western Michigan by 20-something. I think we are capable to do that when we have our legs. I think this is the second game of a long roadtrip and I think we were tired and we played a really good team. I think UWM is going to be great this year. They are an NCAA Tournament team and we beat them on their floor. Lots of credit to Sandy and her staff and her team. I think they have a real nice team. The way that they press you and trap you, they make you play their way. We were able to handle it, but they make you play like that. That is a credit to them."
