Women's Basketball Wins Fifth Consecutive
Feb. 3, 2000 Dayton, Ohio - The UWM women's basketball team pushed its season-high win streak to five games with a 71-65 overtime win over Wright State on Thursday night. Senior guard Daryl Schaffeld and freshman guard Jessica Wilhite led UWM (11-8, 5-1 MCC) with 16 points each. The Panthers trailed in the second half by as many as eight points, but went on a 17-2 run to take a 59-51 lead with 1:30 remaining in the game. But Wright State (5-13, 3-3 MCC) went on a run of its own. The Raiders outscored the Panthers, 12-3, in the final 58 seconds, including the tying basket with 2.3 seconds remaining in regulation. "We just have to execute in late-game situations," said UWM coach Sandy Botham. But the Panthers dominated overtime, holding the Raiders to a lone three-point basket in the extra session. "We played with determination and refused to lose," said Botham. "We took the next step as a team tonight." Sophomore guard Corrin Von Wald added 10 points and team-bests of seven rebounds and four steals. The win marked UWM's first win at Wright State since the 1990-91 season.
UWM, which is currently tied with Detroit for first place in the MCC, travels to Indianapolis, Ind. to play Butler on Saturday.
