The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Cross Country/Track and Field team have signed two athletes to National Letters of Intent. The Panthers have signed RJ Pire from Middleton (Middleton) and Joe Wawrzyniak from Milwaukee (South Milwaukee), both of whom should help the programs continue their evident rise to success.

RJ Pire, a senior at Middleton High School, finished 12th in the W.I.A.A. Division I state cross country meet by running the 5,000 meter event with a time of 16:11.80. Pire also won the LaCrosse Sectional and the Big Eight Conference championship in 2003. To add to his list of accomplishments, Pire was a state qualifier in the two-mile for track and field in the spring of 2003. He finished 15th in the state meet.

Joining Pire is Joe Wawrzyniak, a senior at South Milwaukee High School. Competing in the Southeast Conference cross country meet, Wawrzyniak came home with the title by running a 16:05 in the 5,000m. Battling against strep throat, he advanced to place third at the South Milwaukee Sectional and finished with a time of 17:03 at this year's state competition. Wawrzyniak will join the Panthers as a top-10 finisher in the 2003 state track and field meet. He placed eighth in the two-mile with a time of 9:41.07.

"Being able to sign two athletes of their caliber at such an early time gives us confidence that young athletes are seeing the positive direction our program is taking," Panther head coach Pete Corfeld said. "They will definitely bolster our lineup and will make our young team stronger now and in the future."
