UWM Set To Run In Regional CompetitionNov. 10, 2003 MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men and women's cross country teams will head to Terre Haute, Indiana on Saturday, November 15 for the NCAA Regional Meet. The men's competition will be first at 11:00 a.m. with a 10-kilometer and the women to follow at 12:15 p.m. with a 6k. The meet will advance the top three teams on the men's side and the top two teams for the women onto the NCAA Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa on November 24. UWM head coach Pete Corfeld has his team ready to go and will be looking for a good performance from his squad. Corfeld will be looking to junior Anna Christian and sophomore Josh Nygren for strong performances. Christian kept dropping her time throughout this season and has made an impression as being a consistent runner. "Anna has been giving us strong performances all year long and I think she could honestly move on with another strong showing," Corfeld noted. Josh Nygren has shown steady improvement from his freshman year to this year. Nygren has been a top performer for the Panthers throughout most of this season. "Josh has a lot of potential to him," Corfeld added. "I see him as a guy that will use each year as a stepping stone until he hits his goal." In Christian and Nygren, the Panthers have a good foundation to work with and will be looking at the meet as a way of gauging the programs growth and direction. "I'm expecting some of our men to finish in the top 60 and some of our women to finish in the top 50," Corfeld stated. "We've gotten a lot better and we'd like to make the push towards fielding a very competitive squad when we roll into next season, but this is where we'll start to see who wants to make that push."
Looking Back - Men "The men came through with a strong effort," said Panther head coach Pete Corfeld. "They really pushed themselves and finished in the top half. For being a fairly young team, the guys really responded well to the competition around them." Finishing at the top for the men's teams was Butler. Butler's men successfully defended the 2002 title to claim this year's title. Loyola and Youngstown State finished 2nd and 3rd with the UWM men finishing 4th.
Looking Back - Women "Our women did a great job today," Corfeld added. "I'm proud of them because they just got after it. Today was a really good day for them." Butler paced the way for the women to lay claim to its second consecutive title. Loyola finished second with UWM following up.
How the Panthers Have Faired The men also competed in the Loyola Lakeshore Invitational on Saturday, October 4. The squad finish 8th out of 18 teams with performances highlighted by a Top 30 finish by sophomore Josh Nygren.
