UWM Cross Country To Compete At Great Lakes RegionalMILWAUKEE, Wis. (Nov. 9, 2005) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women cross country teams will look to qualify as teams or individually for the NCAA Championships when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., Saturday (Nov. 12) for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The top two women's and top three men's teams from each of the nine regions automatically qualify for the national meet, while 13 teams receive at-large bids. The Great Lakes Region is arguably the top in the region, as eight men's teams qualified in 2004, including almost half of the nation's at-large nods. Last Time Out: At the Horizon League Championships, the Panther women repeated in third place, while the men took fourth. Sophomore Angie Huebner was the top women's finisher for the fourth time this season, while seniors Josh Nygren and Nate Weiland each finished among the top 11 for the men. Butler swept both sides for the third-straight season, while Loyola took second for both, ahead of the Milwaukee women. UIC's men took third, just ahead of UWM. League Honors: Josh Nygren placed sixth to earn his third-straight all-league honor and second-straight first-team award. He was joined by classmate Nate Weiland on the men's all-league teams, as Weiland placed himself on the second team for the second consecutive season. Angie Huebner made it three-straight all-league first team honorees with her seventh-place finish. Anna Christian had earned first-team honors the two seasons prior. The top-seven finishers at the meet are named to the Al-Horizon League First Team, while seventh through 14th place earn a spot on the second team. Rankings: In the USCCCA Great Lakes Region Poll released Nov. 1, the Milwaukee men maintained their No. 13 ranking for the fourth-straight time in the bi-weekly poll. UWM had peaked at No. 12 early in the season, but has settled into the 13th slot. Considered one of the toughest regions in the national, the poll features just one league school ahead of the Panthers in No. 8 Butler. Loyola is the only other school ranked in its region, sitting fifth in the Midwest Region. Up Next: Milwaukee is vying for a bid to the NCAA Championships, which are held Nov. 24 in Terre Haute, Ind.
