The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men and women's cross country team will head to Youngstown, Ohio to compete in the Horizon League Cross Country Championship. The meet is set for November 1 with men slated to start at 11 a.m. and the women to follow at 12 noon.

Looking Back - Men
The men competed in the Pre-Nationals meet on October 18 and came away with encouraging performances by Josh Nygren, Bryan Hassmer and Andy Kivioja. Nygren paced the UWM attack with a time of 25:34 for the eight-kilometer race. Junior Bryan Hassmer placed second for UWM with a personal best time of 26:03 while Andy Kivioja completed the race with a time of 26:11.

The men also competed in the Loyola Lakeshore Invitational on Saturday, October 4. The squad finish 8th out of 18 teams with performances highlighted by a Top 30 finish by sophomore Josh Nygren. The Marinette, Wis.-native covered the eight-kilometer course in 25:18, good for 26th place overall. Nygren was followed in the meet by senior Andy Kiviola and sophomore Nate Weiland, who finished 58th and 78th, respectively with overall times of 25:55 and 26:11. Freshman Ben Uphoff inished 100th overall in a time of 26:23 while junior Micah Hanthorn rounded out UWM's top five with a time of 26:35 and 135th place showing

Looking Back - Women
Junior Christine Wampach who paced the Milwaukee women's attack during the Pre-Nationals. Wampach covered the six-kilometer course in 22:32. Fellow junior Anna Christian finished right behind Wampach, finishing 122nd overall in a time of 22:33. The next two Panther harriers, Katie Anderson and Alison Shattuck finished 156th and 182nd overall, covering the course in 23:04 and 23:28, respectively.

The women did some significant work during the Loyola Lakeshore Invitational by finishing 7th of 17 teams. Freshman Kourtney Nault posted her finest performance as a collegian, as she led UWM and placed 42nd overall with an 18:42 clocking in the five-kilometer race. Junior Anna Christian finished 61st overall just 12 seconds behind Nault while another underclassman, Katie Anderson, placed 72nd in a time of 19:01. Allison Shattuck finished 95th overall and fourth for UWM in a time of 19:18 while Christine Wampach ran a time of 19:22, good for 103rd overall.

The Competition
The men will face stiff competition Saturday morning as Butler is still considered the team to beat. Loyola, one of the conference's better teams, has lost one of their top runners due to injury, but remain a force.

"Our men will be facing some tough competition, but they have the ability to come through with a good performance," head coach Pete Corfield noted.

On the women's side, parody seems to be arising in the league.

"Our women's team has a very good chance to surprise the competition," Corfield stated. "The women's competition seems to have evened up allowing other teams a chance to shine."

Alison And Anderson Lead The Way

The 2003 version of the women's cross country team will be led by a pair of familiar faces. Alison Shattuck, a senior, and Katie Anderson, a sophomore, finished in UWM's top three in every race last season. Anderson paced UWM with a 20th place showing and 19:09 clocking at last season's Horizon League Championship while Shattuck crossed in 19:14, good for 22nd place. In addition to Shattuck and Anderson, the Panthers return junior Anna Christian and Christine Wampach from last year.

Men Harriers Return Five Familiar Faces

The 2003 campaign should be a bright one for UWM's men's cross country as it returns five of its top seven runners from a year ago. Pacing the running Panthers will be senior Andy Kivioja, juniors Micah Hanthorn and Bryan Hassemer, and sophomores Josh Nygren and Nate Weiland. Nygren consistently ran in the No. 2 spot for coach Corfeld in 2002, while Hanthorn, Hassemer, and Kivioja running in the three through five spots. Milwaukee will look to improve upon a 4th place finish in the 2002 Horizon League Championships.

On The Record With Pete Corfeld

"We have a solid core of returnees on both the men's and women's squads and I expect a lot of them. We came into practice with a good attitude and we have really been training hard. I certainly expect us to mix it up with the perennial top teams in the Horizon League."
