UWM Cross Country In Action At Two Meets This Weekend

(Oct. 11, 2007) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's cross country teams will make their finals runs before the Horizon League Championships this Saturday when the teams will be split between the NCAA Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., and the UW-Parkside Invitational in Kenosha, Wis. Both the men's and women's teams will have representatives at both meets as the teams prepare for the league meet at Valparaiso, Ind., Oct. 27. The Panthers are coming off a pair of 22nd-place finishes at the Roy Griak Invitational, Sep. 29, in Minneapolis, Minn. Senior Holly Nearman was the women's top finisher for the eighth-straight meet she's competed at dating back to last season. She placed 62nd among the 252 runners in the field with a time of 22:47. Senior Nick Hawley was once again at the head of the men's side in his sixth-straight meet, taking 122nd. Sophomore Ryan Mleziva was close behind, taking 126th. Milwaukee has not competed at the NCAA Pre-National Invite since 2005. That year, Josh Nygren and Nate Weiland paced the men to a 27th-place finish, while the women took 34th. The 2007 Horizon League Championships are up next for the Panthers. The meet will be hosted by league newcomer Valparaiso in Valparaiso, Ind. The women will be looking to improve on a third-place showing last season, while the men took fourth.
