UWM Finishes 8th At Lakefront Invitational

Nygren notches top 30 finish

CHICAGO - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee cross country teams posted an impressive showing at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 4) as the women finished 7th in the 17 team field while the Panther men placed 8th out of 18 teams. The Lakefront Invitational is one annually one of the most competitive cross country meets in the Midwest, features top local powers as well as many Horizon League foes.

On the women's side, UWM continued its trend of running in a pack, as the top five to cross the line finished just 40 seconds apart from each other. Freshman Kourtney Nault posted her finest performance as a collegian, as she led UWM and placed 42nd overall with an 18:42 clocking in the five-kilometer race. Junior Anna Christian finshed 61st overall just 12 seconds behind Nault while another underclassman, Katie Anderson, placed 72nd in a time of 19:01. Allison Shattuck finished 95th overall and fourth for UWM in a time of 19:18 while Christine Wampach ran a time of 19:22, good for 103rd overall.

The Panthers strong showing placed them in a seventh place tie with Team Adidas, an independent team of former college runners. Wisconsin won the meet with 31 points, narrowly edging Nebraska, who finished second with 32 points. Purdue finished third with 103 points and were followed by Northwestern (134), Illinois State (138), Loyola (186), Milwaukee (245), Adidas (245), Illinois-Chicago (248) and SE Missouri State rounding out the top ten with 254 markers.

The Panther men's eighth place showing was highlighted by a Top 30 finish by sophomore Josh Nygren. The Marinette, Wis.-native covered the eight-kilometer course in 25:18, good for 26th place overall. Nygren was followed in the meet by senior Andy Kiviola and sophomore Nate Weiland, who finished 58th and 78th, respectively with overall times of 25:55 and 26:11. Freshman Ben Uphoff inished 100th overall in a time of 26:23 while junior Micah Hanthorn rounded out UWM's top five with a time of 26:35 and 135th place showing.

Meet host Loyola ran away with the crown on the men's side, finishing the race with 55 total points. Team Adidas finished second with 83 points while fellow Chicago-based school DePaul finished third with 104 markers. Rounding out the top ten was Purdue (110), Colgate (120), Illinois State (152), Nebraska (187), Milwaukee (197), Dayton (202) and Western Illinois (279).

Both teams will enjoy two weeks off before competing in the Pre-National Invitational Oct. 18 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
