The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's cross country teams get a taste of national competition when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., Saturday (Sept. 24) for the Roy Griak Invitational. The Griak Invitational draws some of the top teams in the nation, and will feature a national-length 6,000m course for the women. Last time out: The Panthers posted a pair of top-three finishes among Division I squads when they last compete, Sept. 9, at the Bradley Invitational. The men's finished second among five schools, while the women were third out of seven. Junior Ben Uphoff paced the UWM men with a second-place finish. On the women's side, sophomore Angie Huebner made her season debut with a sixth-place showing. Clean Sweeps: Following the Bradley Invitational, Milwaukee swept the Horizon League's weekly runner of the week awards. Ben Uphoff earned the men's award for the first time in his career. Meanwhile, Angie Huebner earned her second career weekly honor. Huebner was the last Milwaukee woman honored, while UWM had not had a men's runner of the week since the 2002 season. Deja Vu: As a freshman in 2004, Angie Huebner opened the season with a win at the UIC Home Opener. She was honored as the League Runner of the Week. This season, Huebner made her season debut at the Bradley Invitational. While she did not take first, she was once again named league runner of the week after her first race of the season. Last Year's Griak: Anna Christian was the top Panther finisher at last year's Griak Invitational, taking 69th place to lead the women to a 28th-place finish. On the men's side, Nate Weiland was the team's top runner, as he took 80th place. The Milwaukee men finished 21st at the meet. Up Next: UWM returns to action at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational Saturday, Oct. 1, in Chicago. Hosted by league-foe Loyola, the meet gets underway at 11 a.m.
