Panthers Face Three Wisconsin Teams At Husky Invitational

Cross country heads to DeKalb, Ill., for second meet of the season

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Sept. 11, 2008) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's cross country teams will be in action next this Saturday, competing at the Husky Invitational in DeKalb, Ill.

The meet, hosted by Northern Illinois, will look like a Wisconsin state meet with the Panthers, Wisconsin, Marquette and Green Bay all expected to compete. Augustana will also be at the meet.

UWM faced Green Bay last week on both the men's and women's side. The team's finished ahead of the Phoenix, which posted sixth-place finishes in both the men's and women's meets.

Both the men and women are coming off a fourth-place finish at the DePaul Open, Aug. 29 in Chicago, their last time out. The men, led by four top-20 finishers, scored 88 points at the seven-team meet. Meanwhile, junior Abbie Zaspel led the women with an eighth-place finish.

The Milwaukee men, looking to rebound from an eighth-place league finish last season, benefited last time out from a strong freshman performance. Junior Ryan Mleziva was the team's top finisher, while three rookies were also in the top 20. Dan Uphoff was right behind Mleziva in 12th , while Thomas Wells was 18th and Ryan Baumgartner 20th.

On the women's side, UWM's two returning all-league performers led the way as Zaspel was third and senior Erin Magargee was 16th. Freshman Stephanie Walker made a splash by running as the third Panther scorer in 20th place.

 

 

After this weekend's meet, the team has two weeks of before returning to Illinois, yet again, Sept. 27. The Lakefront Invitational in Chicago will be the Panthers' third of four consecutive meets held in the Land of Lincoln this season. UWM's fourth trip south will be for the Bradley Classic on Oct. 17.
