Panthers Run Strong at the 2003 Horizon League ChampionshipsNov. 1, 2003
WARREN, Ohio - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men and women's cross country teams a strong showing at the 2003 Horizon League Cross Country Championships with the women finishing 3rd and the men 4th. The women had five of their runners finish in the Top 25 from a field of 87. Leading the Panthers was junior Anna Christian. The Horicon-native ran the 5k in 19:10.31 to finish sixth overall and earned 1st team All-Conference honors. Also joining the Top 25 for UWM was Christine Wampach, Katie Anderson, Ali Shattuck and Kourtney Nault. Wampach and Anderson finished within seconds of eachother with Wampach leading with a time of 19:45.15. Shattuck and Nault both finished with times under the 20-minute mark. "Our women did a great job today," Panther coach Peter Corfeld said. "I'm proud of them because they just got after it. Today was a really good day for them." Butler paced the way for the women to lay claim to its second consecutive title. Loyola finished second with UWM following up. On the men's side, UWM was paced by Josh Nygren, Andy Kivioja and Nathan Weiland. All three finished in the Top 25 from a field of 88 competitors. Nygren, a sophomore from Marinette, led the Panthers with a 14th place finish, running the 8k in a time of 26:12.50. Kivioja chipped in with a finishing time of 26:38.65 to qualify for 20th. Nathan Weiland joined in the action by running the 8k with a time of 26:41.60.
"The men came through with a strong effort," Corfeld added. "They really pushed themselves and finished in the top half. For being a fairly young team, the guys really responded well to the competition around them. Overall, I feel that both our teams did extremely well and have shown definite improvement this year to leave us with a great deal of optimism."
Finishing at the top for the men's teams was Butler. Butler's men successfully defended the 2002 title to claim this year's title. Loyola and Youngstown State finished 2nd and 3rd with the UWM men finishing 4th. |
