Panther Men Take Fourth At League Championship

Nygren, Weiland named all-league for second-straight year

KETTERING, Ohio - Seniors Josh Nygren and Nate Weiland repeated their all-league honors from 2004 as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's cross country team took fourth place at the 2005 Horizon League Championship Saturday afternoon in Kettering, Ohio.

The Panthers scored 100 points to finish behind Butler, which won its seventh-straight league title with 31 points, Loyola in second with 36 and UIC third with 85. Butler and Loyola finished first and/or second for the eighth-straight year.

Nygren earned his third all-league honor, finishing sixth and being named to the first team for the second consecutive year. He crossed the line in 24:41. Weiland repeated as a second-team performer with his 11th-place finish and time of 25:04.

Sophomore Nick Hawley and juniors Justin Gorman and Ben Uphoff rounded out the UWM scorers. Hawley ran a time of 25:39 for 22nd place. Gorman finished 29th in 26:21, just ahead of Uphoff in 32nd with a time of 26:32.

The second half of the league began with Youngstown State in fifth with 126 points and Detroit in sixth with 182. Host Wright State scored 188 and UW-Green Bay 193 to round out the field.

Sophomore RJ Pire and freshman Steve Vesbach also ran, taking 40th and 43rd places. Pire crossed the line in 26:56 and Vesbach 27:14.

Milwaukee's season continues Nov. 12 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The University of Indiana hosts the event in Bloomington, Ind.
