Panthers Take Second At NIU Huskie Invitational
DeKALB, Ill. (Sept. 13, 2008) - Junior Ryan Mleziva led three top-10 finishers for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's cross country team as the Panthers took second at the Northern Illinois Huskie Invitational Saturday. UWM finished with 42 points, trailing only Wisconsin. The Badgers took the top five scoring places and finished with 15 points. Green Bay and Marquette were also at the meet, with the Phoenix taking third with 73 points and the Golden Eagles not scoring as a team due to just four runners finishing. Mleziva was the second non-Badger across the line, taking seventh in a time of 27:16. For the second meet in a row, freshman Dan Uphoff was nipping at his heels, taking eighth just six seconds back in 27:22. Freshman Ryan Baumgartner rounded out the top-10 with a time of 27:44. Freshman Chris Schunecke and junior Jason Axt also scored for Milwaukee, finishing just six seconds apart. Schunecke was 13th in 28:11 and Axt in 14th in 28:17. The Panthers' top-seven also featured juniors Mike Sorenson and Eric Pitt. The duo also finished close together, with Sorenson taking 18th in 28:28. Just seven seconds later, Pitt crossed the line for 20th place. Milwaukee returns to action in two weeks, heading to Chicago for the Lakefront Invitational Sept. 27.
