Panthers Win Huskie Invitational
DeKALB, Ill. (Sept. 12, 2009) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's cross country team took second through fifth places at the Huskie Invitational to take first place at the six-team meet Saturday afternoon. "Winning is good," UWM head coach Pete Corfeld said. "Not everyone has started running for us this season, so to run second through five is pretty good. It was a promising meet, team-wise, and shows us what we have to work with. To have four guys running together like that, and controlling the race like that, is cool. We'll get that fifth runner." The Panthers finished with 31 points to pace the field, while Western Illinois took second with 46, just ahead of Iowa Western Community College in third with 53. Green Bay placed fourth in the team standings with 119 points, while Judson was fifth with 135 and Chicago State sixth with 157. Sophomore Chris Schuenke led Milwaukee in second place, completing the 8000m course in 26:41.40. Freshman Josh Simons was just off that pace in his first collegiate race, finishing third in 26:44.22. Meanwhile, freshman Jake Reilly was fourth in 26:55.49, just ahead of senior Mike Sorenson's time of 26:58.33 and his fifth-place showing. Senior Jason Axt rounded out the Panthers' scorers in 17th place with a time of 28:14.36. UWM's top seven also included sophomore Dan Uphoff in 22nd place and freshman Kyle Kocher in 39th. Uphoff crossed the line in 28:51.08 and Kocher 30:23.72. The Panthers return to action next Saturday (Sept. 19) at the Parkside Invitational in Kenosha, Wis.
