Cate Wins First Collegiate Meet, Leads Panthers To Second

Rookie tops field, Milwaukee opens season on a high note

VALPARAISO, Ind. (Sept. 8, 2006) - Freshman Malachi Cate finished first in his first collegiate meet to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's cross country to a second-place finish at the Valparaiso Invitational Friday night in Valparaiso, Ind.

The Panthers opened their season with a 66-point outing, trailing only Notre Dame with 28. The host Crusaders were third with 71 points, while UW-Green Bay was fourth with 112. IPFW (125 points) and St. Joseph's (139) rounded out the field.

Cate crossed the line in 19:24, edging Kevin McFadden of Notre Dame by three seconds for top honors. The remaining four Panther scorers finished inside the top-20, led by junior Nick Hawley in 12th with a time of 20:03. Freshman Mike Sorenson was 14th in 20:14.

Senior Justin Gorman and junior Jeremy Majors finished just four seconds apart in 19th and 20th place, respectively. Gorman ran in 20:28 and Majors had a time of 20:32.

Freshmen Matt Dreifke and Eric Pitt rounded out the team's top seven. Dreifke was 23rd in 20:38 and Pitt took 31st with a time of 20:59.

Milwaukee returns to action next Friday (Sept. 15) at the Illini Challenge in Champaign, Ill. The first race begins at 5 p.m.
