Nygren Leads Panthers To UIC Home Opener Split

Senior sets course record in winning first cross country event

CHICAGO, Ill. - Senior Josh Nygren won his first collegiate cross country race in record time to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's cross country team to a split at the UIC Home Opener Saturday morning in Chicago. In the event's dual-meet scoring, UWM defeated Chicago State (15-45) and St. Xavier (26-29), but fell to league foes UIC (20-40) and UW-Green Bay (27-30).

On the abbreviated 4.1-mile course, Nygren crossed the line with a course-record time of 20:35, edging second place by six seconds.

Freshmen Steve Vesbach and Nick Porter represented Milwaukee's number two and three scorers in their first collegiate race. Vesbach finished 11th in 22:05, while his high school teammate at Mukwonago High School, Porter, was 13th in 22:17.

Sophomore RJ Pire finished 18th and senior Adam Swanson rounded out UWM's competitors in 25th place. Pire crossed the line in 22:41 and Swanson 23:13.

The Panthers return to action Friday (Sept. 9) at the Bradley Invitational in Peoria, Ill. The first race gets underway at 5:30 p.m.
