Panthers Post Four Top-20 Finishers At DePaul Open
CHICAGO, Ill. (Aug. 29, 2008) - Junior Ryan Mleziva took 11th and three freshman placed among the top-20 to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the DePaul Open Friday evening. The Panthers tallied 88 points for fourth in the seven-team field. Loyola took first at the meet with 33 and was followed by UIC with 48 points and the host Blue Demons with 53. UWM did finish ahead of league foe Green Bay, which took sixth with 161 points. St. Xavier in fifth (161 points) and Chicago State in seventh (220) rounded out the field. "Both of our teams (men's and women's) showed me some potential today and I'm happy about that," Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld said. "Both teams were packed up really close and finished in the middle, but closer to the top half than the bottom. For a season-opener I was happy with where we're at." Mleziva crossed the finish line of the four-mile race in 21:26.24. Freshman Dan Uphoff made an immediate impact for Milwaukee, taking 12th just four seconds back in 21:30.96. Freshman Thomas Wells was 18th in 21:44.81 and freshman Ryan Baumgartner finished in 21:53.56 for 20th. Junior Eric Pitt was UWM's fifth scorer with a 28th-place finish and time of 22:14.93. Meanwhile, the team's top-seven was filled out by freshman Chris Schuenke in 34th place (22:30.28) and junior Mike Sorenson in 37th (22:37.83).
The Panthers have two weeks off before returning to action at the Huskie Invitational, hosted by Northern Illinois on Sept. 13. |
