MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Feb. 14, 2008) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field team returns from a two-week lay-off at the Iowa State Classic this weekend in Ames, Iowa.

The meet kicks off Friday and runs through Saturday.

Milwaukee ended up not attending the Roo Open in Akron, Ohio, last weekend as scheduled, but did send some athletes to the Dick Pond Invitational, hosted by Lewis in Romeoville, Ill. Sophomores Matt Dreifke and Jason Axt competed in the mile run, with Dreifke taking 12th in 4:38.28 and Axt 14th in 4:42.94. The times were season-bests for both runners.

The last time the Panthers competed as a team was also in Iowa at the Northern Iowa Invitational. Sophomore Tyler Bucholz paced UWM that day with the third-best time in school history in both the 60m (7.04) and 200m (21.89). His 200m time netted him a first-place finish in the event, while he qualified for the finals of the 60m, but did not competed.

Bucholz named the Horizon League Athlete of the Week after the meet for the first time in his career. He was the second men's team member to win the award this season after senior Larry Ehrhorn garnered the honor after the first meet of the season. UWM has also boasted the league's weekly award winner on the women's side twice.

The Panthers are quite familiar with the Iowa State Classic, having scheduled the meet in each of the last seven seasons. Last season, the team's performance was highlighted by Nick Wichert breaking the school weight throw record, a mark that would fall to Ehrhorn two weeks later at the league meet.

Milwaukee is also preparing for the 2008 Horizon League Indoor Championships in Kent, Ohio. The meet is hosted by Youngstown State this season and is just two weeks away, March 1-2. The Panthers are the four-time defending indoor league champions and have won titles in nine of the last 11 years.

Before heading to the league meet, UWM does have one last tune-up, hosting the UWM Panther Tune-Up Friday, Feb. 22, at the Klotsche Center. The meet is the team's only home meet of the 2008 season.
