Panthers Halfway To Fifth-Straight League Indoor Crown
KENT, Ohio (March 1, 2008) - Junior Adam Schleis repeated as league indoor long jump champion and two more Panthers earned all-league second team honors as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field team took the early lead on the first day of the 2008 Horizon League Indoor Championships Saturday. Milwaukee has 39 points after day one, leading UIC, which has 31. Butler and Youngstown State are close behind with 30 points apiece, while Valparaiso tallied 11 points for fifth place. Loyola, with eight points, and Detroit, with six, round out the field. Schleis, who has 2006 outdoor and 2007 indoor league long jump titles to his credit, won the event on the first day with a leap of 21-10 ¼. Sophomore Quinn Mongoven garnered all-league second-team honors as runner-up in the event, jumping 21-9. Four Panthers scored in the event, as senior Darren Cole took fourth (21-6) and sophomore Josh Zill placed sixth (21-3 ½). UWM also got a runner-up finish out of junior Sean Jaehnig, who took second in the pole vault. Jaehnig cleared 15-1, while junior Adam Podd also scored with a final height of 13-7 1.4 for fifth. Other scorers on day one included senior Larry Ehrhorn in the weight throw, sophomore Ryan Mleziva in the 5000m and the distance medley relay. Ehrhorn threw 54-4 for fourth in the weight throw and Mleziva ran a time of 15:38.35 for fifth in the 5000m. The medley relay ran a time of 10:35.67 for fifth, with junior Eric Pitt, sophomores Matt Dreifke and Mike Sorenson, and freshman Andrew Manuel competing.
Saturday was dominated by preliminaries for the shorter running events, with 12 Panthers qualifying for finals between the 60m through 400m and the 60m hurdles. Sophomore Tyler Bucholz was the top UWM qualifier in the 60m, 200m and 400m events. He was one of four qualifiers in the 400m, taking third in the prelims with a time of 49.10. Sophomore Isaiah Adams also ran 49.10, but took fourth, junior Patrick Casey was fifth in 49.44 and freshman Jared Foerch was close behind in eighth in 49.92. In the 200m, Bucholz took second in 22.20, with senior Lynn Koepke qualifying third in 22.22 and Casey sixth in 22.30. Bucholz also ran a time of 7.06 in the 60m, also for third, with Schleis also qualifying in the event fifth at 7.08. The 2008 League Championships continue on Sunday. |
