ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Feb. 27, 2010) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field team won two individual events and is in first place after the first day of the 2010 Horizon League Indoor Championships Saturday.

Behind league titles by senior Quinn Mongoven and sophomore Ben Crogan, the Panthers have 56 points, 29 ahead of second-place Butler with 25 points. Host Detroit has 20 points for third place, while Loyola is fourth with 18 and UIC fifth with 16 points. Youngstown State has 12 points and Valparaiso seven to round out the field.

The meet concludes Sunday. Milwaukee has won the last six league indoor championships, including last season when the team finished with 147. YSU was runner-up in 2009 with 98.

Mongoven claimed his first career long jump crown with a leap of 23-2 3/4, the fourth-best jump in school history. Sophomore Jake Whitewater, the 2009 champion in the event, took second with a jump of 23-0 3/4, the sixth-best leap in school history. Freshman Dan Simon also scored in the event, taking sixth with a distance of 21-8 1/4.

Crogan cleared 15-7 to win the pole vault. UWM had three more scorers in the event, as Simon and sophomore Zack Gowdy tied for third with a height of 14-7 1/4. Sophomore Drew Feuk had a height of 13-7 1/4 for fifth.

Freshman John Simons earned all-league second-team honors as runner-up in the 5000m. He crossed the line in 14:37.08 for the third-best time in school history.

Also scoring on the meet's first day was sophomore Matt Jensen in the weight throw and the distance medley relay. Jensen threw a personal-best 53-9 1/4 to tie for third. His throw moved him up to fourth in school history. The DMR took fifth in 10:49.73.

 

 

A number of Panthers also qualified for the finals of the 200m, 400m and 800m. Senior Tyler Bucholz and junior Cory Yttre qualified for the finals of both the 200m and 400m. Junior Jared Foerch will join the duo in the 400m finals. In the 800m, sophomore Jake Spaciel and freshman Ryan Weir also qualified for Sunday's finals.
