MILWAUKEE - Corey Kupfer of Grafton, Wis., and Joel Mauer of Glendale, Wis., have signed National Letters of Intent to dive for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming and diving team next fall, head coach Dave Clark announced today. The pair brings to six the number of signed recruits for the men's team.

Kupfer finished third at the Wisconsin High School state Division 2 championships earlier this spring, scoring 407.65 points. He also finished third as a junior, fourth as a sophomore and 13th as a freshman at Grafton High School. He also was a YMCA National Finalist on 1m.

"Corey has been a consistent top-four diver in the state and a YMCA national finalist," Clark said. "He should help keep our men's diving program the best in the league."

Mauer also placed third at the Wisconsin High School state championships, but in Division 1, where he scored 386.25 points. As a junior, he finished 14th, an improvement of three spots from his sophomore year. He was also a YMCA National Finalist on 3m this past year. Mauer was also a high-school teammate of current Panther diver Jeff Jasinowski.

"Joel's diving has been improving at a remarkable rate," Clark said. "This year's improvment moved him to the top three in the state and a YMCA National Finalist spot. We look forward to having him continue this progression at UWM."

Kupfer and Mauer combine with Dana Elzea and Matt Howard, both of Savage, Minn., Lance Scadden of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Karl Winderl of Hartford, Wis., to give the Panthers six recruits thus far for the 2003-04 season. Scadden and Winderl signed with UWM during the early signing period back in November, while Howard and Elzea signed earlier in the week.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming and diving team finished fourth at the Horizon League Championships, held on Feb. 26-Mar. 1 in Cleveland, Ohio. The Panthers, winners of the 2000 Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now Horizon League) title, also excel in the classroom, having been named Academic All-America as a team for the third consecutive semester by the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America after the fall 2002 semester.
