Luba Named Horizon League Swimming and Diving Athlete of The Week

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimmer Matt Luba has been named Horizon League Athlete of The Week for the week of February 23, 2004. Luba came through with encouraging performances at the Midwest Classic (2/21-22) for the Panthers to receive the award. The sophomore claimed second-place in the 400-yard Individual Medley and fifth in both the mile and 500-yard freestyle at the Midwest Classic this past weekend. Luba's time of 17:40.39 in the mile was strong enough to push the second-year Panther into the fourth slot on the Panther men's team top times list. "Matt's performances were very encouraging," Panther head coach Dave Clark said. "He's tried to work hard throughout the year and it's nice to see him finish his second year in the program with solid times." Luba is a native of Shorewood. The sophomore placed fifth at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association's state swim meet in the 500-yard freestyle.
This is the first time Luba has garnered the league's weekly award in his collegiate career.
