UWM Swimming & Diving Team Falls To Eastern Michigan
Oct. 31, 2009 YPSILANTI, Mich. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team won six events Saturday but it was not enough, falling to Eastern Michigan University. Senior Jeremy Waldhart, junior Dan Heraly, sophomores Jordan Diel and Sam Keele, freshman Nathan Welchlin and the 200 freestyle relay all posted victories to highlight the day of competition in the pool for Milwaukee. The UWM women's team, swimming very shorthanded because of the flu, lost to both Eastern Michigan and to Toledo. Official team scores were not available. For the men, Waldhart led a one-two-three showing in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in a time of 52.81. Sophomore Kyle Trelka and junior Matt Kluczinske tied for second with a time of 53.27. Waldhart was also second in the 200 back in 1:56.29. Heraly had a strong outing, winning the 1650 freestyle in his first attempt this season in a time of 16:30.00. He was also second in the 500 free with a time of 4:46.99. Diel topped the field in the 100 butterfly (52.01), Keele in the 200 IM (1:57.62) and Welchlin in the 200 freestyle (1:42.90). Welchlin also nearly scored a second victory, taking second in the 100 free (47.08). Junior Jake Kalinowski (50 free) and the 400 medley relay team (3:30.59) also came through with second-place efforts. Senior Rachel Grimm was a bright spot for the women, winning the three-meter diving event with a point total of 245.65. She was also fifth on the one-meter. Junior Kelsey George just missed a victory on the one-meter, as her second-place total of 246.55 was edged by the winning total of 246.95. George was also third on the three-meter.
Sophomore Sarah Wardecke also chipped in with a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:06.11 and fourth in the 100 free in 53.58. It will be another meet-filled weekend for Milwaukee, as it hits the road for meets against Wheaton College Friday and then a three-team meet in Chicago Saturday, taking on UIC and North Dakota. |
