CLEVELAND - Josh Baseheart was named Horizon League Athlete of the Year Saturday as the 2003 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships wrapped up in Cleveland with the Panthers in fourth place overall. Baseheart collected three NCAA B Cuts during the season, including two during the weekend at the league championships.

Baseheart finished second in the 100 freestyle, narrowly losing to Cleveland State's Warren Vickers by .07 seconds, finishing in 45.17. Michael Belting added a third-place finish in the men's 1650 freestyle, finishing in 16:12.15.

Three Panthers collected a fourth-place finish on the day. Jason Procto was fourth in the 200 backstroke in 1:51.52, while Kyle Fyock was fourth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:06.53. Rob Vergeer had the other fourth-place marker, finishing there in the 200 butterfly in 1:52.64. Jeff Jasinowski added a seventh-place finish in the 3m diving competition, finishing with 314.05 points.

In addition, the men's 400 freestyle relay team of Adam Steffes, Fyock, Procto and Baseheart was fifth, finishing in 3:05.36.

The Panthers finished fourth, nearly 200 points behind first-place Wright State. UW-Green Bay was second with 689 points, followed by Cleveland State with 672. Milwaukee had 511 points, while UIC had 487 to finish fifth, and Butler had 139 for sixth place.

Baseheart will now wait to see whether any of his three NCAA B Provisional mark are fast enough to qualify him for the NCAA Championships. UWM has never had an NCAA Qualifier at the Division I level.
