Baseheart Takes League 50 Free Title
Feb. 27, 2003 CLEVELAND - Josh Baseheart opened the 2003 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships in style on Thursday, winning the 50 freestyle and setting a new league and school record in the process. Despite Baseheart's win, the Panthers sit in fifth place of six teams after the first full day of competition. In the preliminaries of the 50 freestyle, Baseheart finished in 20.23, good enough to set the Horizon League and school marks, and also give him a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. In the finals of the event on Thursday night, he was a hair slower, but still managed to win, finishing in 20.42. Baseheart was also a member of the 400 medley relay team that collected a first-place finish for the Panthers, and set a new school record in the process. The men's relay of Jason Procto, Kyle Fyock, Rob Vergeer and Baseheart finished in 3:22.33, breaking the old mark by .03 seconds. In other action Thursday, Michael Belting and Peter Clark finished sixth and seventh in the 500 freestyle, with Belting finishing in 4:40.41 and Clark posting a time of 4:41.23. Ryan Frohmader finished eighth in the 200 individual medley in 1:56.08, while Jeff Jasinowski finished seventh on the 1m diving board, totalling 185.50 points. The Panthers are in fifth place with 151 points through the first six events. Wright State leads with 223 points, followed by Cleveland State with 213 and UIC with 173 points. UW-Green Bay is fourth with 172 points, while Butler is in sixth place with 58 points.
The Horizon League Championships continue Friday morning with another session of preliminary heats at 10 a.m. EST. Finals from the morning session will be held at 6 p.m. EST.
