Men's Soccer Places Four On Academic All-League TeamDec. 15, 2005 MILWAUKEE - Senior Neil Dombrowski, junior Billy Meier, sophomore Steve Bode and freshman Grant Fernstrum of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team were all named to the 2005 Fall Academic All-Horizon League Team, the league office announced today. The league recognized the academic achievements of its members on Thursday, as a total of 49 student-athletes from five sports were honored in balloting by the league's faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors. UWM led the league with 11 selections overall, well ahead of second-place UW-Green Bay (7). For Dombrowski, this marks the second-straight season he has received the league honor and adds to the list of awards he has received this fall. He was recognized for his academic excellence by being named to the ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-American squad. On the field, he was tabbed a First Team All-Horizon League choice, a member of the Horizon League All-Tournament Team and a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Great Lakes Region Second Team. He carries a 3.61 grade-point average as a business major and finished second in the league in scoring with a career-best 23 points this season Bode joined Dombrowski in earning Academic All-America honors, gaining Third Team notoriety earlier this fall. He was the only Panther to play and start in all 23 games this season, helping lead the team to a league-best goals against average for the season from his central defender position, including a school-record tying 12 shutouts. He tallied career-highs in points (11) and goals (5) in earning All-League First Team honors. He is a psychology major with a 3.71 GPA. Meier carries a 3.75 GPA as a business major and was recognized for his play by being named to the All-League Second Team. He teamed with Bode in the defensive back, making 21 starts in 23 games and finishing with two assists. Fernstrum finished the year as the national leader with his 0.47 goals against average, setting a new UWM school record in the process. He posted a record of 10-2-4 overall in 16 games (all starts), allowing just eight goals in 1544:33 of playing time. His 10 shutouts tied the school mark, posting five-straight on two occasions.
