Former Panther Soccer Player Wins MLS TitleNov. 23, 2003 CHICAGO - The championship tradition continues for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team and it's alums. Just one day after the 2003 UWM men's team won its first round NCAA College Cup match, it was a former Panther claiming victory, as Manny Lagos helped his San Jose Earthquakes squad win the 2003 Major League Soccer title here Sunday (Nov. 23). Lagos started and played a large portion of the title match as San Jose claimed the 4-2 victory over the Chicago Fire. Lagos, who played at UWM from 1990-91, played primarily in the midfield for San Jose in 2003. The 1990 Most Valuable Player for Milwaukee head coach Brian Tompkins, finished fourth on the Earthquake squad with 11 points this season. Lagos enjoyed two very productive seasons on the east side, scoring 32 goals in those two years, good for eighth on the school's all-time goals scored list. The midfielder notched 17 goals in 1991 and 15 in 1990, en route to Second-Team All-America accolades. Lagos played on UWM's 1990 NCAA Tournament team which dropped a 5-1 decision to Indiana in the first round.
The 2003 version of the Milwaukee soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season with a 4-1 victory over Western Michigan on Saturday. UWM will now travel to South Bend, Ind., to face No. 5 seed Notre Dame University. Gametime is set for Wednesday (Nov. 26) at 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Field on the UND campus.
