Dombrowski And Bode Earn Academic All-America Honors

Players recognized with highest academic honor in Division I soccer

Nov. 21, 2005

MILWAUKEE - Senior Neil Dombrowski and sophomore Steve Bode of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team were both named members of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's Soccer Team on Monday.

Being honored on one of the three 11-member national teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), is the highest academic honor possible in Division I men's soccer.

Dombrowski earned his spot on the Second Team Academic All-America squad, while Bode was chosen as a member of the Third Team. They have both played key roles in helping Milwaukee into the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-consecutive season.

Dombrowski leads the Panthers (14-4-4) in goals with nine and points with 23, both career-highs. His five assists are second on the squad as well. He is majoring in business and carries a 3.61 GPA in the classroom.

Bode has been one of the anchors of the defense from his central defender position, helping lead the team to a league-best goals against average of 0.69 for the season (19th in the country), including a school-record tying 12 shutouts. He is the only player to start all 22 games on the year and has been a force on offense as well, scoring five goals (second on the team) and 11 points overall. He is a psychology major with a 3.71 GPA.

The Horizon League was well-represented overall. In addition to the two Milwaukee choices, UW-Green Bay's Adam Ben-Zikri and Butler's Patrick Reilly joined Dombrowski on the Second Team.

The Panthers, who are making their fifth-straight appearance in the tournament (and eighth overall), will play at No. 1 New Mexico in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday night, staring at 8 p.m. CST. A victory would move the team into the third round of the event for the first time in school history.
