Men's Soccer Shuts Out Wisconsin, 1-0
October 5, 1998
MILWAUKEE - The UWM men's soccer team continued to play strong defense in three games last week, allowing only two goals in three games. Included in that span was a 1-0 shutout against Wisconsin on Oct. 2 at Milwaukee's Uihlein Soccer Complex.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Schmidt (Racine, Wis.-Horlick) had perhaps the best game of his collegiate career against Wisconsin, according to UWM assistant coach Stan Anderson. In addition to posting the shutout, Schmidt recorded 14 saves, a mark that ranks him fifth in school history. Said UWM coach Louis Bennett "If there was a shot, he was there to stop it. If there was a cross, he was there to snag it. He was like a fifth defender for us."
Schmidt's stellar play in goal was validated by UWM's top scorer, Tony Colvin (New Berlin, Wis.-Eisenhower). Colvin scored the game's only goal in the 62nd minute when he chipped the ball over the Badger keeper.
Unfortunately, the Panthers could muster no more offense during the week, losing to both Marquette and UWGB by the score of 1-0.
Against Marquette on Sept. 30, the Panthers put more shots on goal than the Golden Eagles, 6-3, but could not convert. Schmidt recorded two saves in the game.
Against UWGB on Oct. 4, UWM allowed the gamewinner in the 54th minute.
"There was a period in the second half when we didnt concentrate or play. That allowed them to score," said Bennett. "Prior to and after the goal, we played well. Our gameplan was executed, except in the attacking third of the field."
The Panthers try for their first league win of the season when they travel to Detroit on Sunday.
