Jallow Named Horizon League Player of the YearNov. 5, 2004 INDIANAPOLIS - Complete Release in PDF Format
Antou Jallow was named the Horizon League Player of the Year for the second time in his career while head coach Louis Bennett earned Coach of Year honors for the fourth consecutive season as the league announced its 2004 all-league teams here Friday (Nov. 5). Jallow, who becomes just the second player in league history to earn the award more than once, was named to the first-team while senior Trent Furtsch and sophomore Dale Weiler were named to the second-team squad. "I am really happy for Antou, Dale and Trent that they were recognized for their fine play this year," Bennett said. "However, I am also disappointed for guys like Chris Brisson, Khaled El-Ahmad, Eric Mickschl and others who truly are among the best players in the league. However, at UWM we never get bent out of shape over rankings and awards and we aren't about to start now." The team, which consisted of 12 first-team members, 14 second-team members, and a 12-member all-newcomer squad was comprised via a points system during the regular season. After each league game the head coaches would rank three deserving players from their own team in descending order while ranking between three and five players from the opposing team. Then, at season's end, the players were named to each team based on a total accumulation of points. As a result, each team had at least two players named to the two teams while no team had more than four players on the two squads. Already one of the most decorated players in league history, Jallow joined UIC's Eric Lukin (1999-2000) as the only two-time league Players of the Year. The Uppsala, Sweden-native is currently tied for the all-time Horizon League goals scored lead with 54 while holding school records for career goals scored, single-season goals, and single-game goals scored. A three-time first-team all-league pick, Jallow was named the Horizon League Tournament MVP in 2002. A mainstay in the UWM backline for four seasons, Furtsch was finally honored for his solid play with his first-ever all-league selection. The creative defender has six points on the season with two goals and two assists and 19 career points thanks to three markers and 13 assists. A member of the 2001 Horizon League All-Newcomer Team, Furtsch has started all 15 games he has appeared in this season and 82 in his career, the most of any current UWM player. Weiler, one of the more dynamic players in the league, is making his first appearance on the Horizon League Second-Team. The sophomore from Hudson, Wis., currently leads the league with 11 assists on the season with four of those coming in league games. Furthermore, the 11 helpers are good for fourth-best nationally among all Division I soccer players. Weilers sits second on the UWM scoring list with 13 points. Bennett, the winningest coach in school history with 118 career victories, was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year for the fourth straight season and fifth time in his nine seasons. UWM shared the 2004 regular season title with Butler but claimed the No. 1 seed in the league tournament for the fourth straight year thanks to a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs. Bennett owns a 118-58-12 all-time mark but a 63-17-5 record in the last four seasons.
