No. 8 UWM Set To Host 2002 League Tournament

Panthers secure the tourney's top seed

The city of Milwaukee and the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will see plenty of soccer in the next two weeks as UWM plays host to both the 2002 Men's and Women's Horizon League Soccer Tournaments. The women's touranment is set to begin on Thursday (Nov. 7) with the men's tourney starting on Saturday (Nov. 9). Milwaukee claimed the top spot in the women's tournament with a 9-5-5 overall record and 5-0-1 conference tilt while the No. 8 ranked Panther men's squad won their second straight league title with a 15-1-1 mark and 7-0-0 record in league play.

The 2002 Horizon League women's soccer tournament will begin on Thursday with three quarterfinal games. The contests, which will be played at Uihlein Field in Milwaukee, will feature No. 2 seed Butler versus No. 7 Youngstown State at 4 p.m., followed by No. 4 Loyola and No. 5 Wright State at 6 p.m. with No. 2 Detroit and No. 6 UW-Green Bay ending the day with a 7 p.m. showdown. As the tourney's No. 1 seed, UWM will receive a first round bye.

On Friday the tournament semifinals will take place with a pair of games at Uihlein Field. The first semifinal featuring the BU/YSU winner and the UDM/UWGB winner will kick off at 5:00 p.m. with UWM taking on the LUC/WSU winner at 7:30 p.m.. The two semifinal winners will advance to Sunday's championship match will be played at noon at Engelmann Field on the UWM campus. The winner of the championship game receives the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship Tournament.

On the men's side, the tournament will kick off on Saturday with four semifinal games all at campus sites of the highest seed. UWM secured the No. 1 seed as league champions and will host No. 8 Loyola at 12 p.m. Other games include No. 7 UW-Green Bay at No. 2 Cleveland State, No. 6 Detroit at No. 3 Illinois-Chicago and No. 5 Butler at No. 4 Wright State.

If Milwaukee wins its quarterfinal game, the semifinal and championship games will be moved to the UWM campus and Engelmann Field on Friday (Nov. 15) and Sunday (Nov. 17). The CSU/UWGB winner would play the UIC/UDM winner at 11 a.m. on Friday with UWM facing the winner of the BU/WSU game at 1:30 p.m. The two semifinal winners will then square off at noon on Sunday for the right to advance to the 2002 NCAA Tournament.

Tickets for the women's Horizon League Tournament are $8 for adults and $2 for students or you can purchase an all-session pass for $20.
