WILMINGTON, N.C. - Freshman Dan Horst and sophomore Dale Weiler connected on both goals as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee defeated previously unbeaten UNC-Wilmington 2-1 in men's soccer action here Sunday (Sept. 19). Horst scored both Panther goals as UWM split a trip to the Carolinas this weekend. With the victory Milwaukee improves to 2-2-2 while UNC Wilimington falls to 5-1-1 on the year. Furthermore, with the victory UWM head coach Louis Bennett became Milwaukee's all-time winningest soccer coach with 110 career victories.

"We really tried to upgrade our schedule this year and this game was an example of that," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "Wilmington came into the game undefeated and just went on the road and tied North Carolina. We really needed to win this game and we got it. I'm pleased with the way we played today."

Milwaukee took advantage of the windy conditions in the first half as all three goals were scored in the first 45 minutes. The Panthers got on the board first when Weiler and Horst teamed up in the 40th minute. Weiler took a pass and crossed a long pass across the goal mouth. Horst was there waiting just outside the far post and snuck the ball home with a left-footed shot.

The Seahawks wasted little time tying the game as the hosts scored 14 seconds after the Horst goal. UNCW launched a long ball off the kickoff where it sat around the top of the penalty box. Reserve forward Nick Acosta collected the loose ball and rifled a shot home from the top of the penalty area.

The Panthers continued to press forward with the wind at their backs and eventually scored the game-winner just before halftime. The play began when Antou Jallow's shot rifled off the post. The ball bounced back to Trent Furtsch who was taken down just outside the penalty box. The ref ruled to play on and Weiler collected the ball, launched another ball across the goal mouth where Dan Horst scored on an impressive diving header.

"Troy Speilmann really changed the dynamic of the game when he came in with 15 minutes left in the first half and Dan Horst finished well," Bennett added. "We were playing our second game in three days in warm weather and under unfamiliar conditions. We played 18 guys and our depth really helped us today. We got two goals and both assists from our bench and that was the difference in the game."

UNCW played with the wind in the second half but could not crack the stingy Panther defense. Chris Brisson, who has played four different positions early on in 2004, helped solidy things as he played well from a defensive center midfield spot. Eric Mickschl moved his record to 2-1 in goal as he needed two saves in his 90 minutes of playing time. UNCW took nine shots on the day to eight for UWM but five of the Panthers shots were on target to just three for the Seahawks.

Milwaukee will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 25) when it opens Horizon League play at Detroit. The game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. on the Detroit campus.
