Former UWM Standout An All-Star
July 27, 2001 Former University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee standout Manny Lagos has been selected as a Major League Soccer All-Star. Lagos, who plays for San Jose, is having the finest MLS season of his six-year career with six goals and four assists from his left midfield position. The 30-year old Minnesota native has been particularly hot over the past two weeks, as he netted a pair of goals on both July 14 versus Tampa Bay in a 2-1 Earthquakes win, and against D.C. United on July 18 in a 4-0 San Jose victory. Lagos has also played in MLS with New York/New Jersey, Chicago and Tampa Bay. "Manny has certainly emerged as one of our top weapons this year," Earthquakes General Manager Tom Neale said. Lagos was the 1990 team Most Valuable Player at UWM while leading the Panthers to a 16-4-2 mark and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Lagos was a first-team All-American in 1991 after being named a second-team All-American in 1990. He scored 32 goals in two seasons, placing him seventh on the all-time UWM scoring list. He also played for the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team, and played in Europe with U.E. Lleida of Spain.
The MLS All-Star Game is Saturday afternoon in San Jose.
