Men's Soccer Team Concludes Successful Camp SeasonJuly 13, 2006 MILWAUKEE - The 2006 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panther Soccer Camp season wrapped up recently and was a huge success. The camps drew a record number of over 200 participants, held at Engelmann Field from June 12-30. "It was a great week and the turnout was fantastic," men's soccer head coach Jon Coleman said. "We were thrilled with the week and the staff was phenomenal. It was great to see so many kids involved with soccer and playing on Engelmann Field."
Throughout the weeklong sessions the campers, ages 7-13, were taught various technical skills of the game. Dribbling, receiving, passing, shooting, and goalkeeping were many of the topics taught at the camp. The week concluded with their own Panther World Cup where the players put all of the technical skills they were taught to use. The camps were held during the World Cup and this generated a lot of excitement. There were times the UWM coaching staff brought the campers in the Panther Room to watch critical moments of the World Cup on the big screen TV. The campers also had the opportunity to watch the entire USA vs. Ghana game where the participants were decked out in red, white and blue and cheering loudly for USA to beat Ghana so they could continue on in the Cup.
"It was nice to be able to have the opportunity to do that," Panther associate coach Bob Spielmann said. "The outcome wasn't good for USA so the remainder of the day was uninspiring. This showed the coaching staff that the players were very involved and passionate about the beautiful game of soccer." "The players worked extremely hard throughout the week but yet had a lot of fun, which equals a ton of learning."
