UWM Takes On Marquette As Part Of Inaugural Wisconsin Cup

Teams battle in third annual Bob Summy Memorial

April 28, 2008

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team participated in the first annual Wisconsin Cup at Valley Fields Sunday, joining Marquette, Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in spring soccer action.

Marquette ended up with the title, knocking off the Panthers, 1-0, in the opener before playing Wisconsin to a scoreless draw. Each contest consisted of two 35-minute halves without an overtime. The Golden Eagles eventually fell to the Badgers on penalty kicks in the championship, while Green Bay captured third place with 2-0 win over UWM. Wisconsin advanced to the championship after defeating Green Bay on PKs earlier in the day.

The sole goal of the first game came from Josh Currry off of a second-phase flick from a corner kick in the 56th minute of the game.

"Both teams created some chances down the stretch, but they succeeded in finding the net," UWM head coach Jon Coleman said.

Then, in the consolation, the Panthers fell 2-0 to the Phoenix. Both goals for UWGB came from rebounds in the box after the ball was cleared off the line.

The Panthers have one more spring date left, traveling to Oshkosh to play UW-Oshkosh and Green Bay May 3.
