Panthers Win One, Drop Two In Tough Weekend
April 23, 2002
MILWAUKEE - The UWM men's soccer team traveled seven hours in team vans to take on the Minnesota Thunder in Mankato, Minn., before falling, 2-1, last Friday afternoon. The Panthers turned right back on the road for scrimmages the next morning, beating the Wisconsin ODP U-18 team, 5-0, and losing to Marquette, 2-1, in its second consecutive at Valley Fields. Against the Thunder, the outdoor professional soccer team of the USL, the Panthers demonstrated brilliant soccer and were later rewarded with a 1-0 lead. Kyle Lance assisted on the goal when he slid the ball across the box for Bobby Lish to finish on the far post. Lance took over the ball from Trent Furtsch, who made a great run on the left side out of the back. Minnesota scored the equalizer to take the 1-1 score into halftime. The Thunder then scored the gamewinner on a penalty kick taken with about six minutes remaining in the game. UWM was able to find the back of the net against the Olympic Development Program, with Antou Jallow scoring three goals to lead UWM. Furtsch and Evan Richardson also added goals for the Panthers. After the win over the ODP team, Milwaukee quickly followed with a scrimmage against Marquette. The Golden Eagles took advantage of the fatigued Panthers and held a 2-0 lead before Richardson converted a penalty kick late in the game.
The Panthers finish up their spring season with games against the Milwaukee Rampage, the Chicago Fire Reserves and UW-Parkside on Saturday at the Milwaukee County Sports Complex in Franklin, Wis.
