UWM Men's Soccer Spring Schedule
March 28, 2002
MILWAUKEE -- The UWM men's soccer team begins their off-season competition on Sat., April 6, with scrimmages against the Milwaukee Rampage and Oakland University. The Panthers will take on the host Rampage, Milwaukee's professional outdoor soccer team in the United Soccer League, at 9 a.m. and Oakland at 3:30 p.m. in Franklin, Wis. The remainder of the spring schedule includes tournaments at Marquette on April 13 and UW-Green Bay on April 20. The Panthers will also play the Minnesota Thunder, another professional outdoor soccer team of the USL, on April 19 in Mankato, Minn. and a second match-up with the Rampage, as well as games against the Chicago Fire Reserves and UW-Parkside, on April 27. "It's a good spring schedule because we have a variety of teams to play against, professional and collegiate," head coach Louis Bennett said. "It will give the squad the opportunity to establish some patterns of play, and it will give our coaching staff the opportunity to view players that haven't previously commanded a lot of playing time." The Panthers will see the return of Daniel Saavedra and Alejandro Munoz to the squad after both missed the 2001 season. Saavedra was named to the All-Newcomer team in his first season at UWM in 2000, while Munoz joined the team in pre-season training this year. Bennett will also see the addition of Cliff Ellsworth, who transferred to UWM this semester after playing two seasons at Indiana.
