October 23, 1998
CLEVELAND - The UWM men's soccer team captured a much needed win by defeating conference opponent Cleveland State, 2-1, Friday evening. The Panthers bounced back from a 1-0 defecit at halftime with two second-half goals to take the win.
Byron Huson scored the Panthers' first goal off a Scott Dombrowski pass in the 53rd minute. Mark Durham punched in the game winner less than five minutes later from the top of the box off a pass from Bobby de St. Aubin.
"(Assistant coaches Stan) Anderson and (John) Coleman suggested a new formation in the second half and it payed off," said UWM head coach Louis Bennett. "Byron tore their defense apart with his pace and he supplied three other crosses that could have scored goals."
The Panthers outshot the Vikings, 18-8 in the game, 9-1 in the second half.
"(UWM goalkeeper Matt) Schmidt didn't touch the ball for about 20 minutes in the second half," said Bennett. "It was some of the best soccer we've played all season."
The win improves the Panthers' record to 4-10 on the season, 2-3 in the MCC. UWM plays at Akron on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. CT. The Panthers next home game is Friday, Oct. 30, against conference rival Butler.
