Men's Soccer Falls to Loyola, 1-0
October 21, 1998
MILWAUKEE - The UWM men's soccer team was shutout for the seventh time this season as they lost, 1-0, to Loyola at Engelmann Field on Wednesday.
The loss drops the Panthers to 3-10 on the season, 1-3 in MCC play.
"It's the same old story for us. It's turning into agony now," said UWM coach Louis Bennett.
The Panthers outshot Loyola, 14-8 in the game, including a 9-4 advantage in the second half.
Loyola's Derek Szewczyk scored the game's lone goal in the 85th minute and the Rambler defense held against a strong Panther attack in the final five minutes. UWM's J.B. Matthews had UWM's best opportunity during the flurry, but the ball defelcted off another UWM player.
"We are finding a way to miss the net," said Bennett. "We've tried every which way out there. We're at a loss now. It doesn't matter who is on the field. We are able to maintain a level of play that is reasonable, but no one can finish."
UWM keeper Matt Schmidt made four saves in the losing cause.
