Eayrs, James Show The Way As White Team Beats Black Squad

Two sides combine for 17 three-pointers in intrasquad scrimmage

Oct. 28, 2008

MILWAUKEE - James Eayrs scored 17 points and Deion James added 14 as the white squad beat the black squad, 73-64, at the annual University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball Full-Court Club scrimmage Tuesday night at the Klotsche Center.

The white team led by five points at halftime and by as many as 10 in the second half before hanging on to the lead late.

Eayrs, a junior college transfer, scored 14 of his points in the second half. Charlie Swiggett added 11 points for the white team.

True freshman Tony Meier, junior-college transfer Tone Boyle and veteran Ricky Franklin scored 15 points apiece for the black squad, which also got 11 points from sophomore Anthony Hill.

The two teams combined for 17 made three-pointers.

"It is good to be able to play under the lights with fans and get some of those nerves and jitters out," UWM head coach Rob Jeter said. "We have a lot of new faces and those guys got a little taste of what it is like. We also had a chance to see some of our different pieces and now as a staff it is our job to go back and try to make them all fit together."

The white squad jumped out to a 22-15 lead with just under eight minutes to play in the first half and extended its edge to 27-18 on a Kaylan Anderson three. It led 34-29 at the half and pushed its lead to 46-36 on an Eayrs layin with 14:06 left.

The black team fought back to take a 52-51 lead on a Deonte Roberts layin with just nine minutes left, and the black squad took its final lead at 58-57 on a Roberts free throw with 5:23 remaining.

The white team then steadily pulled away from there, with a Ryan Haggerty three pushing the lead to 70-64 with 1:36 left before three late free throws provided the final margin.

"There were some turnovers and times where I thought we could have been a little sharper," Jeter said. "I certainly didn't expect us to play perfect basketball, though, and seeing things in a game setting can put a renewed focus by the guys on taking care of some of the little things."

UWM will start exhibition play Nov. 5, hosting MSOE at the U.S. Cellular Arena in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
