UWM falls to 2-2 on trip

Aug. 24, 2003

SCHWELM, Germany - Traveling through Europe and playing its fourth game in five days, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee finally saw it all catch up Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers dug themselves a 12-point hole midway through the second quarter and never really recovered, falling to Schwelmer Baskets of Germany, 115-84.

Schwelmer used a 27-4 run during the second half to completely take control of the contest and led by as many as 36 points in the late going.

The Panthers struggled to adjust to the narrow court or the officiating at the small gymnasium in Schwelm, finding themselves out of bounds numerous times while running their offense and being whistled for 31 fouls with two players fouling out.

Chris Hill scored 19 points to lead the Panthers, who are 2-2 on their European tour. Mark Pancratz, Joah Tucker and James Wright added 10 points apiece.

UWM actually jumped out to a quick, 12-6, advantage following a pair of three-point baskets each from both Dylan Page and Hill. But Schwelmer responded with a 17-0 run over the next 4:19 of the game to build a 23-12 lead.

UWM bounced back, pulling within 25-21 on a Tucker hoop with 2:01 to play in the period, but Schwelmer quickly rebuilt the lead to 11 and held a 36-29 advantage at the quarter break.

The Panthers pulled within three early in the second period on a Pancratz hoop with 7:45 to play and found themselves within 43-41 on an Adrian Tigert free throw with 4:51 left. But Schwelmer embarked on a 14-4 run, building a 57-45 lead with 1:53 remaining. A 6-0 run by the Panthers pulled them back within 57-51 at the break.

Schwelmer wasted little time in taking control in the third period. The lead hit 69-56 at the 6:49 mark and the decisive run lasted more than 10 minutes, spanning the late third and early fourth quarters as UWM went six-and-a-half minutes without a field goal.

UWM takes Monday off before playing games Tuesday and Thursday in France.
