Summer Notebook: Former Panthers Excel, New Floor At The Cell

Schedule gets closer to completion

July 15, 2008

MILWAUKEE - Former University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee standout Clay Tucker is on the Cleveland Cavaliers' roster for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and wasted little time in posting a solid performance.

Tucker, who helped the Panthers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2003 and remains UWM's all-time leading scorer, tossed in 17 points in just over 22 minutes of play in a 97-94 loss to New York Monday.

Tucker and the Cavaliers have four more games remaining in Las Vegas, including a contest Sunday against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Tucker is one of a number of former Panthers who posted stellar seasons overseas this past year. In fact, he helped Khimky of the Russian Superleague to a second-place finish in both the regular season and playoffs while also helping his squad to its first-ever Russian Cup title.

Dylan Page and Boo Davis also posted top-notch campaigns in Europe this past year. Page was a standout with CB Granada in the top Spanish league. He averaged 13.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Davis led Carmatic Pistoia of Italy with a 19.3 points per game average. Both players are expected to re-sign overseas.

Golf Outing Set For Monday
A handful of spots remain available in Monday's Milwaukee Basketball Golf Classic, set for the North Shore Country Club. Registration for the event starts at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start for the golf scheduled for noon. A dinner and auction will wrap up the event at approximately 5 p.m.

The cost for the event is $325 for an individual golfer or $1200 for a foursome. Tickets for only the dinner and auction are $50. For more information or to register, call Chip MacKenzie at 414-229-5175.

New Look In Place At U.S. Cellular Arena
The floor at the U.S. Cellular Arena has taken on a new look for the 2008-09 season. The entire surface has been refinished and painted, with the newest Milwaukee Panthers' logo prominently on display at center court.

The surface also includes the new men's three-point line, which is set at 20'9", a Horizon League logo in each free-throw lane and a handful of UWM logos on the sidelines. The U.S. Cellular Arena logo is also prominent on the floor.

Among other changes planned at the U.S. Cellular Arena for this coming season is the relocation of the student section to the north end zone. Previously, the student section has been located in the south end zone. UWM students, who receive free admission to the games by showing a valid student ID, will now be situated behind the visiting team basket in the second half of games, enhancing the homecourt atmosphere of The Cell.

The projects downtown coincide with cosmetic work at the on-campus Klotsche Center, where UWM's women's basketball and volleyball teams play. The floor has also been resurfaced with a nearly identical design to the floor downtown.

Schedule Nears Completion
While UWM's full schedule is not yet complete, a handful of non-league games are set. In addition to previously contracted games at Wisconsin and Marquette, the Panthers will play in the World Vision Classic in Ames, Iowa, along with Iowa State, Loyola Marymount and Cal Davis. Milwaukee will face all three teams in the three-day event. UWM is also scheduled to host Bradley in a return game from last season's ESPN BracketBusters event, while Milwaukee will host this season's BracketBusters game in February.

League play is again scheduled to start in December. In fact, according to the latest version of the schedule, the Panthers will host Detroit and Wright State in early December before playing at UIC later in the month.

Early Bird Ticket Deadline Is Wednesday
The deadline for early-bird pricing for UWM's men's basketball season ticket packages is Wednesday. At those special prices, full ticket packages start at just $100. Ticket packages in the 100 and 200 levels are available for the early-bird price of just $225.

Additional ticket packages will go on sale in September, with single-game tickets available in October.
