Two Panthers Earn Post-Season Honors

Paulsen, Smith collect awards

March 15, 2007

MILWAUKEE - Two University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball juniors have earned post-season honors this week.

Paige Paulsen was named the state's newcomer of the year by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, while Avery Smith earned second-team all-state honors from Inside Wisconsin Sports.

Paulsen, who also earned a spot on the Horizon League's All-Newcomer Team, finished second on the team in scoring at 11.3 points per game and led the team in rebounding at 5.7 boards per contest. He reached double figures in points 17 times and tallied a pair of double-doubles. He also earned Horizon League Player of the Week honors Jan. 22 after leading UWM to wins over UIC and Wright State the previous week. Plus, he scored the game-winning layup in UWM's regular-season finale at UW-Green Bay. Paulsen was playing in his first season at Milwaukee after spending two seasons at Northern Illinois.

Smith was the Panthers' leading scorer this season, pouring in 15.5 points per contest. He reached double figures in points 23 times, scoring 20 or more points eight times and 30 or more points three times. After coming off the bench for much of the early season, Smith wound up starting 20 of 31 games. He tossed in a collegiate-best 36 points Dec. 2 at Oakland, a mark that stands as the most points by a UWM player of the bench in school history.
