Canisius Foils UWM, 82-80
Nov. 25, 2000 MIAMI - Tory Jefferson scored on a tip-in with 7.2 seconds to play, leading Canisius College to an 82-80 victory over UWM Saturday afternoon at the Golden Panther Thanksgiving Shootout. The Panthers had a chance to win or tie in the closing seconds, but a three-point try from the left wing by Dan Weisse rimmed off. Chad Angeli appeared to be fouled on an open tip-in try of the miss, but no whistle sounded as time expired. Sophomore Clay Tucker scored 25 points to lead the Panthers (2-2), while senior Chad Angeli added 20. UWM could not overcome 56 percent shooting by the Golden Griffins (2-0). Canisius grabbed a 79-78 lead with 2:23 to play on two Darren Fenn free throws, and Fenn hit 1-of-2 tries nearly a minute later to push the advantage to 80-78. UWM tied the game on an Angeli basket and foul with 1:14 to play, but he missed the free throw and James Wright missed on a follow-up try that would have given the Panthers the lead. The Golden Griffins then held the ball for nearly the final minute of the game, getting a new shot clock on an offensive rebound. Jefferson's tip came off a miss by Clive Bentick. Canisius grabbed a 77-76 advantage on a Hodari Mallory three-point basket with 3:57 to play. But, a Kalombo Kadima tip-in gave UWM the lead back, 78-77. UWM led by as many as nine in the second half, claiming a 65-56 lead on a Tucker jump shot off the glass with just under 13 minutes to play. The Golden Griffins shot 64 percent in the first half, yet the Panthers were able to build a nine-point first half edge, and UWM led 47-41 at the half.
UWM returns to action Monday night at Bethune-Cookman. The Panthers return home Wednesday to entertain Valparaiso.
