Three Baseball Players Earn Spots On Horizon Academic All-League Team8/2/2010 - Tim Patzman, Chad Pierce and Paul Hoenecke of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have been named members of the Horizon Academic All-League baseball team, announced today by the league office. This marks the second-straight season on the squad for Patzman and the first for Pierce and Hoenecke. The three selections are the second-most of any school on the 12-member squad. Patzman continues his impressive run of academic honors, as he became Milwaukee's first-ever CoSIDA Academic All-American in baseball earlier this spring. Former University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee players Joe Nowicki and Ross McCoy headline a group of Panthers on the field playing baseball this summer. In addition to the pair of alumni playing professionally, many current Panthers are spending time in various summer college leagues both locally and across the country. Nowicki is currently playing for the Schaumburg (Ill.) Flyers in the Northern League and is batting .300 overall on the season after a strong month of July. McCoy is playing in the Frontier League for the Normal (Ill.) Cornbelters and currently leads the team with a .348 average. The University of San Diego scored six runs in the first two innings and cruised from there in beating the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team in an elimination game at the NCAA Tempe Regional at Packard Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Toreros (37-21), ranked No. 15 in the country, took advantage of some early miscues by the Panthers (33-26) and a strong performance on the mound by AJ Griffin, advancing to play the winner of the Arizona State/Hawai'i game Sunday afternoon. The 2010 campaign comes to a close for Milwaukee with the loss at 33-26 overall. That marks the seventh 30-win season in school history and first since 2006.
