Nowicki Named An All-Star For Second-Straight Season
July 1, 2008
MILWAUKEE - University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball alumni Joe Nowicki, Mike Goetz and Ross McCoy continue to pursue their dreams of playing baseball professionally. The trio is spread across the country at different levels this summer, each making a name for themselves on the baseball diamond. Nowicki, currently playing for the Delmarva (Md.) Shorebirds - the Class "A" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles - has been named a midseason all-star for the second-consecutive season. He was also recently named South Atlantic League Player of the Week and is currently batting .308 in 2008 while appearing in 77 games. Nowicki, a first team All-Horizon League selection his final two seasons at UWM, has scored 42 runs and banged out 91 hits and leads the team with 26 doubles, 12 home runs and 48 runs batted in. He carries a .542 slugging percentage and batted .352 in May. Goetz, the 2006 Horizon League Player of the Year, has appeared in all 39 games this season for the Traverse City (Mich.) Beach Bums, helping the team to a second-place standing in the Frontier League. He has started each game in the outfield and currently leads the league (by 37 points) with his .381 batting average. He has scored 32 runs, recorded 59 hits, driven in 16 runs and stolen 12 bases. His 21 walks have upped his on-base percentage to a team-best .467 while also posting a .452 slugging percentage. Goetz was named the first all-American in the history of the Milwaukee program after leading the nation with a .493 average as a senior. McCoy started the season with the Lincoln Saltdogs, but was traded to the Reno (Nev.) Silversox of the Golden League in mid-June. After finally getting healthy, McCoy has been on a tear since the trade, batting .364 in nine games, scoring seven runs and driving in five with an on-base percentage close to .500 in the stretch. He earned All-Horizon League second team honors for the third time in his career as a senior in 2007, establishing new UWM career marks for games played, at bats and doubles, while also finishing second in career hits and total bases.
