CLEVELAND, Ohio - Three players from the UWM baseball team have been named to the 2002 All-Horizon League Baseball First Team.

Three others made the second team while four others were named to the all-newcomer team.

The awards were announced at the league's annual baseball banquet, held at the Terrace Club at Jacobs Field in Cleveland.

Catcher John Vanden Berg, third baseman Steve Guden and utility player Troy Doering made the first team. First baseman Dave Pudlosky, middle infielder Adam Christ and pitcher Quintin Oldenburg made the second team. Christ, Doering, David Michna and Geoff Lefeber made the all-newcomer team.

Vanden Berg led the Panthers in hitting during the regular season, posting a .399 average with five home runs and 50 RBIs. Guden hit .286 with 39 RBIs while Doering hit .302 and led the team with 17 stolen bases while starting games at four different positions.

Oldenburg led the Panthers with eight wins, including six in league games. Pudlosky led the Horizon League in RBIs during league contests while Christ hit .291 and stole 15 bases.

Lefeber went 4-0 and posted a 2.08 ERA. His ERA was 1.33 in league games. Michna hit .322 and broke out of a platoon role to become an everyday player during the second half of the season.

The Panthers, who finished in second place during the regular season, open Horizon League Tournament play Thursday at 2:30 p.m. EDT against Cleveland State at Jacobs Field.
