Milwaukee Opens League Tournament Play Wednesday In Ohio

Panthers battle Cleveland State in opener

May 18, 2008

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team will open play in the 2008 Horizon League Tournament Wednesday in Niles, Ohio. The league office announced the tournament bracket late Saturday night after an exciting weekend in which none of the top six seeds was determined heading into play Friday and only three were set heading into the final games last night.

Milwaukee (21-34, 11-15 Horizon) will be the No. 5 seed, opening play against fourth-seed Cleveland State (21-29, 10-13 Horizon) in the first game Wednesday, set for a 10 a.m. CST start time. If the Panthers win, they will advance to play Thursday at either 2 p.m. CST or 6 p.m. CST (depending on seeding) and if they lose the opener, they will play Thursday at 10 a.m. CST.

The first game of the tournament pits No. 7 Butler (12-33, 7-17 Horizon) against No. 6 Valparaiso (18-33, 8-13 Horizon) in a play-in game Tuesday at 2 p.m. CST. The Panthers were on the verge of remaining in that play-in game as the No. 6 seed, but UIC (31-19, 17-6 Horizon) rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday night to win the regular season title and bump Valparaiso into the sixth seed. Wright State (29-20, 16-6 Horizon) will be the two seed and host Youngstown State (23-31, 13-12 Horizon) is the three seed.

UWM's offense will look to carry it to a title, as the team has batted .335 in the month of May and has recorded 10 or more hits in eight-consecutive games heading into play Wednesday. Junior Shawn Wozniak has batted .426 in May with 20 hits and 13 RBI's in 12 games. Senior Jesse Hart has hit .383 and also driven in 13 and scored 12 times in 11 games. The team went 3-2 during the regular season against the Vikings.
